Doc's Advice

Dental Implants: Five
commonly asked questions

By Dr. David Beltran

Wisdoms are the last set of teeth to grow in an adult dentition. They show up anytime between late-teens to mid-twenties, hence the name. Dentists identify these wisdom teeth as third molars.

Honestly, they are not of much use; however, if present, they can help in chewing. But a lack of a third molar is nothing to worry about. Their absence does not, in any way, affect any oral function. As they are the last ones to erupt and farthest of all the teeth, they have higher chances to be clinically complicated.

Let’s find out what are some of the signs that you are getting a wisdom tooth and things about keeping (or not keeping) these teeth.

But don’t worry.

We got all the answers too!

What do these procedures cost?

Although the cost varies from case to case, here's a rough idea
If one or two teeth are missing in the mouth and individual replacements are required, then a single dental implant would be used. The average cost of a single implant with extraction and crown in Florida falls between:
$3000 to $5000
The financed cost range:
$63/month to $149/month
The procedural cost for full-mouth rehabilitation is different
We have two options for full-mouth rehabilitation: All-on-4 and All-on-6
The All-on-4 procedure utilizes four dental implants to support a set of false teeth made by ceramic zirconia.

The All-on-4 is the most sought-after procedure. The average cost for one bridge (upper or lower) for All-in-4 is:
$22k to $26k
The All-on-6 uses six dental implants for additional support of the prosthetic teeth which makes prosthesis failure improbable.
The average cost for one bridge (upper or lower) for All-in-6, the cost ranges from:
$25k to $30k
(this is inclusive of the extraction charges)
The financed cost ranges for All-in-4 and All-in-6 are:
$379/month to $448/month and $430/month to $516/month
The final delivery of teeth is within four to six months

Will I get the tooth (teeth) the same day?

Gone are the days when patients had to wait for months to get their teeth.

Teeth-in-a-day is the procedure we use to give replacements to our patients within a day. Instead of performing the steps over the course of months, we streamline the procedure to fit into a day.
First, all the diseased teeth are removed. After that, 4 or 6 dental implants are placed into the mouth with the help of a high-resolution CT scan to decide the point of placement in the jawbone. Then a temporary, removable restoration is adjusted, as required, and immediately placed over the implants. After this, you’ll be sent home as the dental implant posts need time to heal.

Teeth-in-a-day has made full mouth rehabilitation using dental implants highly convenient as the patient goes home with a new, temporary set of teeth.

The average healing time for implants is usually four to six months, which can be prolonged because of reasons like infections.

You will be called one time during the healing period for placing abutments and attachment pieces and to adjust temporary dentures or take impressions for the final, permanent restoration.

The second set of teeth is usually fabricated within four to eight weeks. Finally, you’ll be called for mounting permanent, non-removable teeth.

How long does it take from start to finish?

Implant placement and completion involve many steps.

First, you must make a pre-implant exam appointment in which your dentist and you will come up with a procedure plan according to your case by going through your x-ray or 3D CT scans and properly examining your mouth for any underlying conditions.

Only after the examination, your dentist will be able to give a tentative outline of the time you’d need to spare. Your surgery hours may differ too, depending on your case and whether you’re given local anesthesia or an IV sedation.

The healing takes place in four to six months, which is delayed in case of a complication e.g., an infection. During these months, an implant screw integrates with the bone around it which takes up the most time.

After the first few weeks of surgery, you will have to visit for abutment and attachment procedures which may take up to an hour. After full healing, a full impression of the mouth is taken to fabricate the final crown; the procedure may also take about an hour.

Four to eight weeks later, the permanent replacement is mounted on the implants and your dentist checks it for misalignment and bite problems to avoid any discomfort in the future.
This takes forty-five minutes to an hour. Later, you’re to visit your dentist biannually for checkups.

Roughly speaking, a total of 5 to 6 visits over a period of 4 to 6 months are required for dental implant treatment.

What is the success rate of dental implants, do they last a lifetime?

The success rate for lower jaw implants is approx. 95 percent while that for upper jaw implants is approx. 90 percent.

The upper jaw rate is slightly less because of less bone density as compared to the lower jaw.

However, there are many reasons for which dental implants may fail. The most important one is the experience of your dentist and his capability to handle any relevant complication.

Here at Allez Dental, our Harvard surgeon, Dr. José Luis Beltrán, D.M.D. M.D. has a vast experience of placing dental implants. Not only is he one of the best implantologist available in the town, but he is also trained as a medical doctor with cumulative skills few doctors collectively possess.

Other factors that play a pivotal role in the failure of the implants are mal-positioned implants which lead to the failure of integration with the bone, poor oral hygiene which leads to infections, implant fracture, and smoking which leads to a decrease in the body’s ability to naturally heal thus weakening the implant. Regular check-ups greatly reduce the chances of premature loss of implants.

Does it hurt?

It really depends on the anesthesia option you choose. We offer 4 kinds of anesthesia.

1. Local anesthesia
It simply numbs the tooth and the area around that tooth. You will still feel the pressure from the outside.

Simple local anesthesia is an option in which the patient is conscious and has full awareness of what’s happening around him.

2. Local anesthesia with the laughing gas
This one is a power combo!

Here the local anesthetic numbs the desired region and the laughing gas (nitrous oxide) helps you relax while the dentist does his job. You’d still be conscious, but more comfortable and relaxed.

It takes about 5 minutes for the laughing gas to take its effect and another 5 minutes after the procedure to wear off.

3. Local anesthesia, laughing gas, and oral sedation
We use this option to put you into a semi-conscious state so that you wouldn’t mind the procedure steps. It’s just like you are watching that new Netflix season, but you keep dozing in between, watching only bits and pieces of the episode.

To achieve the desired sedation, oral pills are given about an hour before the procedure. These pills augment the relaxation effect of the laughing gas, whereas the local anesthesia numbs the surgery area.

4. Intravenous sedation
This is by far the most advanced option in anesthesia. With this option, you go into a deep sleep and have no memory of the procedure as you wake up after the surgery.
